The end of the oxygen vector era will hopefully reduce the amount of talent pulled away from other events by a monomaniacal focus Grand Tours. No one even bothers suggesting that Boonen or Hincapie can win the TdF anymore; even a repeat of Stage 15 in ‘05 would raise some serious questions.
That effective anti-doping measures have helped reduced the overemphasis on three-week GC titles —one of the UCI’s major goals for the ill-fated ProTour—is an outcome hopefully not lost on the sport’s governing body.
