The UCI currently requires that countries name their top 3 riders in the top 50 of the UCI World Rankings to their UCI World Championships CX team. It’s a common-sense rule to guarantee a strong field and prevent politicking—but right now, it’s only applied to the men.
Don’t think the disparity between men and women is a big deal? Talk to Julie Krasniak, currently ranked 16th in the world, and not selected by the French cycling federation after a 6th place finish at the French National Championships. Can you imagine Ryan Trebon—current World No. 17, finished 7th at US Nats—finding himself in a similar spot? I can’t.
